This is one of my favorite moments in the whole series, and I don’t feel like fandom ever talks about it.

This moment is EXACTLY like when they grab hands in the fourth season in “Hush” (4.10) in order to combine their powers and move the soda machine. This is also what I then hate about the next season, and what I don’t understand about it. Willow here is extremely powerful as she just created a spell that would reverse what Glory had done, yet here she can still “ask” for help and power. But next season she has an extreme superiority complex that prevents her from asking for help and power. I don’t understand where it came from.

Indeed: sometimes I have to force-imagine that inconsistencies, such as re: Willow’s powers, do not exist so that I can bask-enjoy moments like this scene in which she needs to reach out for Tara’s hand, and Tara, at the same time, reaches out as well : ♥

#but they’re not inconsistencies because willow was always poised to go down this path#that’s what makes this moment so poignant because willow spends her entire arc on buffy straddling places she might belong#is she a shy quiet nerd or is she a dangerously confident witch#does she back away from tough things or does she overcompensate#the answer is both#where did her superiority complex come from? right out of the dregs of her inferiority complex#so much of her magic in S2/3 was met with negativity and doubt by literally everyone in the scooby gang#and when she got powerful enough to stop messing up simple spells#she just get kept going#simultaneously searching for a limit and hoping she didn’t find one#there are so many warning signs in the early days of her powers that she was susceptible to overdoing it#i think where willow loses herself is in how she thinks she needs to live in the extreme#like buffy does (full slayer) or like xander does (full human)#and the problem is she’s not suited for either#she’s like dumbledore okay; any power she has becomes almost irresitible to abuse#the thing that willow doesn’t realize until too late is that she’s suited for the middle#possibly hovering toward the supreme magic side of things as long as she has a very controlled and equitable partnership with tara#tara is absolutely where willow belongs because tara is her limit#not as a restriction but more as a guidepost#’push a little harder here; it’s okay#but don’t take it this far because otherwise i can’t bring you back’#and that’s exactly what happens#(oops i made myself sad)
